The author's use of descriptive and illustrative details exposes the reader to a new world of magical beings and lands. It's a fantastic tale of the most unlikely hero, a hobbit, who embarks on a quest for treasure but discovers so much more about himself along the way. Despite what he is, the hobbit overcomes many perils of his journey that prior to his quest he never thought he was capable of doing. Perhaps the author's message is that there are no limits to what we are capable of only the limits which we place upon ourselves.
Reading this book was such an enjoyable experience that I would recommend it to everyone without a second thought. The author's flowing, descriptive style of writing is what makes this book a classic.
The Hobbit is full of on-the-edge-of-your-seat adventure. J.R.R. Tolken brings the characters to life in this non-stop action thriller. Once you start to read this book you will be hooked and will not be able to stop reading. J.R.R. Tolken describes everything so well that it feels like this fantasy world is real.
The Hobbit takes place in a world of magic and evil. Bilbo Baggins is an old hobbit who wants to live the rest of his life in peace and harmony, but destiny has different plans. One day Bilbo was resting at his home when all of a sudden many dwarves came to Bilbo�s house, talking about a long and dangerous journey that ends with killing a dragon and taking it�s gold. At first Bilbo quickly rejects the idea. Then he hears exactly how much gold is involved and it was pretty hard for Bilbo to say no, so he decides to go along with the dwarves and the wizard. What Bilbo does not realize is that he going to be facing the most cruel and evil creatures in the world, like goblins, wolves, giant spiders and many more dangerous creatures.
This is definitely one of the best books I have read in my life. Anybody can read it and everybody will like it. This book is J.R.R. Tolken�s best piece of writing by far. This one of a kind tale is a book you will remember your whole life and should definitely be on our book shelf.
I just had to write this review because I noticed several overly negative reviews about a "Play" adaptation of Tolkein's classic. Appparently, these reviewers are confused the product above is a graphic novel, adapted by Charles Dixon and Sean Deming, and illustrated by David Wenzel. Unlike this "Play" the negative reviewers are talking about, this adaptation is fairly true to Tolkein's work, albeit with some material cut to fit in graphic novel format. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and amazing. Worthwhile own for any Tolkein fan, especially those with children. Certainly far more true to the original novel than the movies.
Tolkien's "The Hobbit" is one of the single greatest pieces of modern fantasy literature, characterized by the consistent mystery of any good mythology. Patricia Gray's adaptation is instead characterized by grade school humor. While the first act maintains portions of the Hobbit plot, it does so in a forced, almost incoherent manner. Little background is given for the quest (one brief monologue from Thorin), and the the scenes have little to no transition, moving from Bag End to Trolls to Goblins with only brief respites.
Bilbo is the only character fleshed out at all in the dialogue, and then only as much as the typical protagonist of a Disney Channel original movie. Thorin is selfish, static and shallow, Gandalf is a deus ex machina style plot device whose lines alternate from amusement at the expense of Bilbo to needlessly foreboding. The only truely well done scene in the dialogue is the piece with Gollum.
Though I don't wish to give away the ending, it is sufficeint to say that when we did the read through of the script, all 40+ members of the cast and the director and the producer agreed that the script was weak, and the ending was anticlimatic and poorly written. I wouldn't recommend doing this play unless you are at the middle school level or lower.
This story is a tale of fantasy that took place before man dominated and controlled the Earth. In a world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, an adventurous Bilbo Baggins (a Hobbit and the main character) joins some bearded elves and Gandalf (a wizard) in his journey through Middle Earth. Along the way the band of unlikely companions run into many perils. The adventures include encounters with elves, dragons, wolves, giant spiders, giant eagles, and goblins. Bilbo Baggins finds a ring lost by Gollum (a subterranean creature) and uses riddles and trickery to keep it. This book is a prequel to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Although it is not necessary to read this book to understand the trilogy, it is very enjoyable and gives the reader a background of how Bilbo acquired the ring and introduces Middle Earth and all of its wonderful characters and creatures. The story has many songs written into it that the dwarfs and other creatures sing through-out their journeys. Tolkien's style is very descriptive and consistently uniform. His imagination and ability to keep the action flowing will not disappoint you. I recommend this book for readers ages 12 to adult.
