I remember really liking Tight knit. That there was something special about it. But I never left a review, and now I don't have the details about why. But I can still feel the feelings that book gave me. This book had a storyline that I liked but I felt like more could have been done about it. Ben is a good guy, I liked reading about him. Grace was also interesting. However, I never felt I really got to know them. Can't put my finger on why though. So, an OK read that felt inconlusive despite being concluded...

Under the Dusty Sky Holloway Farms eBook Allie Martin Allie Brennan Reviews
Gracie was a little shallow, self centred and manipulative but she was real. Honestly, what teenage girl doesn't think along similar lines at one time or another? I could totally relate. I loved Gracie's character.
Bentley was honourable and swoon worthy and moments between him and Gracie were really sweet.
Allie has the ability to write a story that flows effortlessly, making a really enjoyable read.
One of my favourite books.Dying for the next one!
I won an eARC copy of Under the Dusty Sky. I have been waiting to read this book. I really like the cover. Allie does a great job designing book covers. I really liked the story but it didn't quite unfold the way I expected.
At the beginning of the story, Gracie's oldest brother Hunter leaves home. He just graduated high school and felt it was time for a change. Gracie takes it really hard because she has abandonment issues. These issues stem from Gracie's Mom leaving the family when Gracie was three years old. For this reason, Gracie is a pessimist when it comes to love. Gracie does not believe that love lasts. However, she believes in creating perfect memories and moments. The things do not always turn out the way people want. Gracie does not get attached to many people because she feels that they will end up leaving.
"No better to keep it fun. To keep all of that feeling stuff out. Then, it doesn't hurt when they lose their flavor." ~Gracie.
Gracie acts very confident and a lot of times she is confident. Deep down, she is broken and there is a vulnerability to her. Gracie is used to getting what she wants. She toys with boys. However, Bentley is no boy and he is in a different league. She is bound and determined to lose her v-card. Bentley is the guy she has in mind. She acts like she is ready but she is not. Gracie is looking for fun and simple. Little does she know that Ben is not simple. Gracie needs a man to keep up with her not a boy.
I really liked Gracie's family. She had great older brothers. They could be a pain in the butt but they were protective of her. I thought her father was a really nice guy. However, I felt that they were enablers at times. Gracie was used to getting her way. She was Daddy's little girl and got away with a lot. Her family kind of tip toed around issues. Sometimes it was hard to know who wore the pants in that family.
At times, I liked Gracie and I disliked her. I like that Gracie was not a pushover and she could hold her own. I liked that she spoke her mind. On one hand, I liked that Gracie was bold. On the other hand, sometimes she was too bold. However, Gracie could be very destructive to the people around her and to herself. I do not even think that she meant to hurt other people or that she always realized that she was hurting others. She treated people like they were pieces on a chessboard. The girl had this edifice built up around her emotions to protect herself. It seemed as though there were two sides to Gracie. The one side of Gracie was overly confident, arrogant, distrustful, self-centered and manipulative. The other side of Gracie was vulnerable, genuine, unsure, a little more open, and sweet. I did not really like the manipulative side of Gracie who put on the fake seduction act. Some of that was not real. I liked the genuine side of Gracie that was real. It was very confusing for Bentley because he never knew what side of Gracie he was going to see.
The thing is that Gracie did not need to act like some siren to get Bentley's attention. She did not even need to come onto him like she did. Bentley was not like a lot other guys. He liked the side of Gracie that was real. Bentley was drawn to the side of Gracie that wore overalls and had a shy smile because that was real.
I thought this was a great passage in the book
Bentley says, "Gracie steps past me, into a slit of soft sunlight that illuminates her face and she's absolutely stunning. I see hot girls everywhere, but as I watch her smile at me, with not a stitch of makeup on her face, I realized I've never before seen a beautiful girl.
Her dark eyes are endless and the longer I look the more I catch glimpses of the side of her she tries so hard to hide. This side.
I get caught staring and she suddenly shifts her gaze to the dusty straw-covered floor and bites at her bottom lip, keeping that smile in check. Her hair is twisted messily and pinned up. Her worn sweatshirt is stretched and ratty and hangs off one shoulder. Her jeans are loose, and her thumbs are hooked casually in the pockets, the mysterious leather book still clutched in her hand. She looks real. Authentic. This is the girl hidden beneath the attitude, the manipulation, the forwardness.
This shy girl who chews on her lip and avoids eye contact breathes a new life into me that I know won't last. I get that same urge as before. To wrap her up inside me keep her there always. Because this isn't the Gracie that the world gets to see." ~Bentley.
I would just say to try not to judge Gracie right away. Sometimes it is really hard to like her. A few times I wanted to give up on her. I never hated Gracie but I did hate some of her actions. However, she is a damaged person. Gracie bottles up her emotions and doesn't know how to deal. There were times when I was disappointed in her and angry with her. There were times when I wanted to shake her and say Grace, what are you doing? I wanted to jump in the pages of the book and talk some sense into her. There was hope for Gracie and she started to open her eyes and see how her actions affected others.
Ben was beyond amazing. He was a wonderful guy. I saw him as the voice of reason in the book. He gave some good advice. Unfortunately, sometimes people have to learn the hard way.The guy had a lot of restraint and maturity for his age. There is a scene where Gracie gets drunk and Bentley has to come and get her. He even holds her hair back when she throws up. What a guy. He was a real gentleman.I was a little surprised by Bentley's back story. Ben has this need to fix wounded birds. Ben has this habit of wanting to save women. Usually, it does not end well for him. In the past, Bentley has been used by women. He is one of those people who gives and gives in a relationship and people take and take. There is kind of a role reversal in the book. Sometimes women want to save a guy and think that they can change them. Well in this case Ben wants to fix Gracie and protect her. Unfortunately, it does not work like that a person has to want to change. In a sense, Ben helps illicit a change in Gracie but he is not the sole reason for the change. However, Gracie needed a reality check. I liked that Bentley did not always let Gracie have her way. Ben was such a lovely guy.
I felt some things in this story were true to real life and the way people act. I really like that the story had Gracie and Ben's povs. I like that it was not a story where there was instant love. Gracie and Ben were "in like" and on a journey towards love. I like that they didn't rush into saying the "L" word. Based on Gracie's feelings about love, I felt that it made sense to not just throw the word out there.
I want to thank Allie for the eARC. I look forward to reading Asher and Lacy's story. Lacy was so sweet and such a good friend to Gracie. Asher is a great guy. He has been in love with Lacy for a long time. He never made a move because she is Gracie's best friend. I want to see if Gracie and Ben are still together by the end of summer.
This book was REAL with interesting characters, and a plot that kept me guessing until the end.
Seriously one of my fav-ever YA Contemp reads.
Worth it even just for the truck scene ;-)
if you like drama and romance you will love this book just like I do. if you want a cute romance book this is for you. you will smile while reading this book. I know I did (
Graceland Holloway is selfish, manipulative, a bit controlling. That's not the real her though. That's just what she wants people to see. I like Gracie, even the fake one for some reason. She has reasons for the way she is and I get it. Graceland took me on an emotional ride, she had me laughing one minute and wanting to hug her the next with tears in my eyes.
Then there's Bentley McKinna.
"He is like the car. Hard and smooth and sexy..."
I like Gracie's way of thinking.
He is helping on the farm for the summer. Bentley only shows people what he wants them to see also, but he wants to know the real Graceland. He takes no crap from Gracie and tells her like it is and I love him for that.
There is some definite chemistry between the two as they try to figure each other out. I enjoyed how there relationship develops, it is all very realistic to their age and the situation. It's not insta-love.
Under the Dusty Sky just isn't about their relationship though, it handles the relationship of Gracie's family and friends as well. They are a wonderful cast of characters. I love her brothers and how protective they are over her.
Under the Dusty Sky was a wonderful heartfelt read!
I am a huge fan of slow and easy and this book develops relationships at a wonderful pace. I loved Ben and would love to read on about him and his sister Sasha. I also love that Grace has a very very important breakthrough and although she's just turned 16 she's making great strides into becoming an adult. The Holloways are an interesting bunch and I can't wait to get my hands on book 2!
